TSO Innovation Alliance

TSO Innovation Alliance

As Europe’s energy transition accelerates, TSOs face increasing challenges in ensuring a stable, reliable and sustainable electricity supply. To address these pressing issues, leading TSOs across Europe are joining forces in a collaborative effort and integrate innovative solutions. By leveraging shared expertise and resources, executing pilots for different innovations, and developing new technology together, this partnership aims to create a more resilient and efficient European energy system, capable of supporting the growing demand for renewable energy while maintaining grid stability.

Founding members of the alliance

The Alliance puts that commitment into practice, through actions fostering the innovation ecosystem, together with joint research and development on solutions that will boost the resilience, efficiency, and technological advancement of the continent’s electric infrastructure.

The TSO Innovation Alliance was officially established with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between major European Transmission System Operators, the founding members:

  • Terna (Italy)
  • RTE (France)
  • Swissgrid (Switzerland)
  • Elia Group (Belgium & Germany via 50Hertz)
  • TenneT Holding (Netherlands)
  • Red Eléctrica (Spain)
  • Amprion (Germany)

Driving innovation beyond business-as-usual

The Alliance has been established in response to the growing desire for leading European TSOs to assume a more active role in shaping the future of the electricity sector. The members share common challenges and priorities and aim to coordinate their innovation efforts more closely, leveraging expertise and resources.

By aligning on strategic technology needs and promoting shared priorities, they seek to guide market developments and foster innovative approaches and solutions that meet the evolving challenges of the energy transition.

One thing all TSOs underline is that we have to go beyond business as usual to overcome the current challenges the energy grid faces.

A shared platform for open innovation

The TSO Innovation Alliance is not about solving challenges on our own. We believe the complexity of Europe’s electricity grids demands collaboration across the entire ecosystem. That’s why we actively want to work  together  with start-ups, scale-ups, and knowledge institutes to co-develop solutions.

Through open innovation we aim to:

  • Scout and test new technological solutions for shared challenges
  • Exchange metrics, insights and good practices across borders
  • Foster collaboration among TSOs and the wider ecosystem through fast and efficient PoCs

By working side by side, we can accelerate innovation and build more resilient, reliable and future-proof grids for Europe.

First Open Call: Building a Climate-Resilient Power Grid

The first area in which the Alliance will demonstrate its added value is “Building a Climate-Resilient Power Grid”, a field where climate impacts, operational security, and technological innovation converge.

Europe is facing an increase in extreme weather events and power systems are shifting towards weather-dependent energy sources. These two factors underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions to ensure grid resilience across Europe.
